Pros and cons of higher education in Austria

blog
We have already come to the conclusion that it is worth learning German, because it opens the way to good, prestigious and FREE education in Germany. But Germany is only one of several countries where this option is available.

If we ask ourselves where else it is possible, our search will lead us to the southern neighbor of the main German-speaking country – to Austria.
Education in Austria

Education in Austria is also free, student fees for students from the European Economic Area are € 363.36 per semester. Students from Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan pay the same fees as the Europeans. For other countries – € 726.72 per semester. For this money, the student receives many benefits that these contributions pay for: preferential travel, free museums, some study materials, etc.

As in Germany, you can apply for a scholarship or grant. Austria has its counterpart DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), this is Österreichischer Austauschdienst, ÖAD (Austrian Exchange Service). Applicants for accessible education may also be interested in the following scholarships: Franz Werfel Scholarship, Bertha von Suttner Scholarship, Austrian Scholarship, for conducting Austrian development research. To obtain one of these scholarships from applicants require good motivation, good knowledge of German and / or English and age up to 35 years.

Earlier, when we talked about free education in Germany, we mentioned that the relocation itself is expensive. You need to pay for the filing of documents, pay visa fees, buy expensive educational materials. You need to pay for accommodation: rent, food, entertainment. But Austria, in some places, can be cheaper than Germany, and you get the right to work at half the rate.

In order to enroll, you need to have “sufficient knowledge of the German language,” which each university defines for itself separately.

It is worth noting that Austria is slightly smaller than Germany, there are not so many universities, there are also no free programs. Not all public universities have completely canceled tuition fees.

What are the advantages of Austria in comparison with the same Germany? A big plus is that for enrollment you will have enough of a high school diploma. Even your school grades will not play a role. This means that you do not need to study for 2 years in the university of your home country or graduate from Studienkolleg to be eligible to study at a university in Austria. True, you can be sent to preparatory courses at the university, where you separately pull up a language or some other subject, depending on the chosen specialty.

Also, from the good news, if you did study in your home country for one, two, or as many years as you like, you will not need to start learning from zero, and you will be able to enter immediately into the second or third year.

As it turned out, Austria is also a great place with prestigious institutions of higher education. There are downsides, but there are also pluses. It all comes down to one thing: if you don’t learn German, then you yourself greatly reduce your chances of getting such an education.
